A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast tissue to detect cancer or lumps in the breast. A mammogram can detect abnormalities while they are in the curable stage.
During a mammogram, the breast is pressed between two plates for a few seconds while pictures are taken. To make it as painless and easy on you as possible, our skilled and compassionate staff will perform your mammogram with gentleness and care.
Very low levels of radiation are used. While many people are worried about exposure to X-rays, the low level of radiation used for a mammogram does not significantly increase the risk of breast cancer. For example, one mammogram exposes a woman to roughly the same amount of radiation as flying from New York to California on a jet plane.
The American Cancer Society recommends that every woman 40 and older have a yearly mammogram. Women younger than 40 should have a mammogram if they have a family history of breast cancer.
